Cultural diversity, cutting-edge technology, dynamic business opportunities and endless entertainment are just a few of the features that have helped establish Las Vegas as a city on the move. The highlights below serve as an introduction to the best of Las Vegas and complement more detailed information contained in the rest of the Las Vegas Relocation Guide.
As the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, we’re pleased that you’re a new neighbor. You have so much to look forward to including dazzling art exhibits, live entertainment and cultural offerings, recreation outings and adventure at every corner. Combine all of this with a beautiful climate and a thriving economy, and you’ll find no better place to call home than Las Vegas!
“At the center of our life in Southern Nevada, Las Vegas is an oasis built out of the Mojave Desert, yet the desert remains a crucial part of our environment providing substantial recreational opportunities,” said Tim Cashman, Co-owner of Las Vegas Red Rock and Zion Harley. “The beauty and splendor of Red Rock Canyon and the Valley of Fire are sites to behold. Both locations provide the opportunity to hike and explore our natural environment and heritage.”
Hot City
Substantial job growth and a friendly-business climate have earned Las Vegas accolades across the nation. In February 2007, Inc. magazine named Las Vegas “Hottest City in America,” among large cities, and in 2006 Forbes magazine named Las Vegas as one of the top three best cities to find a job.
According to population estimates from the U.S. Census released in April 2007, Clark County is among the top 10 fastest-growing U.S. metro areas in the nation, experiencing growth of 29.2 percent.
The cost of living, which is lower than in many comparable U.S. cities, has made Las Vegas a highly-desired place to call home. Many are pleased to learn that there is no personal income tax and that property taxes are moderate. More than 6,000 people each month relocate to Las Vegas, largely due to job growth, which has increased by 7.5 percent in the past year and by 25.3 percent in the past five years.
As for quality of life, the region provides the best of many worlds. Las Vegas mixes never-ending entertainment, sophisticated cuisine, and vibrant sunsets to create a one-of-a-kind environment.
Unique Place
Las Vegas has become the entertainment capital of the world offering the best in live entertainment, incredible food from award-winning chefs and unique shopping experiences. Thanks to the variety of top hotels in the city, residents and visitors can get a taste of New York, Paris, Venice, Egypt, Mandalay and other exotic locales without ever leaving the city limits!
Las Vegas’ kaleidoscope of diversity reveals itself in the city’s vast international and artistic festivals. The city’s vibrant character generates a full calendar of events and activities designed to celebrate the cultural differences of people around the globe. Las Vegans can shop the world without leaving their zip code and enjoy international perks in their very own backyard. Las Vegas truly is an international city with all the expected amenities.
Beyond the Strip, there are many rich cultural opportunities with access to natural beauty all around. The innate splendor of the desert provides a breathtaking backdrop for recreational outdoor activities. There is hiking in Red Rock Canyon, skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Charleston and swimming in the biggest desert oasis, Lake Mead. The Grand Canyon, Valley of Fire, Zion National Park and Death Valley are all short day trips from the Strip.
Job Growth
According to the Nevada Development Authority (NDA), 26,000 jobs with an economic impact of $5.1 billion have been created in Southern Nevada in the past five years. This has occurred because new and existing businesses have selected the area for expansion and growth. This translates into jobs in high-tech, telecommunications and manufacturing industries, not just in the hospitality field.
Economic Diversity
The Nevada labor force has increased by nearly 350,000 people in the last decade. According to Recruiting Nevada, over 167,000 jobs will be created in the Las Vegas area over the next 5 years. While gambling and related leisure activities remain the primary driving force for Las Vegas’ seemingly unstoppable growth, the key to maintaining long-term economic stability lies in diversification.
The 2007 Boyd Corporate Site Selection Leading Indicator Poll reports that Las Vegas has the most favorable business climate for new corporate investments in the West, beating cities such as San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Las Vegans are working hard to ensure that new businesses represent the needs of the city, beyond those associated with gaming and hospitality.
Educational Options
Las Vegas is known for its distinguished school districts and ground-breaking colleges and universities. Prospective residents with families and those wishing to pursue higher education are in awe of the opportunities that abound in the Las Vegas area. Las Vegans are working hard to ensure that the educational opportunities present are as diverse as the increasing population and have implemented dozens of programs designed to develop a well-educated talent pool.
In addition to a traditional liberal arts curriculum, most area community colleges and universities offer an array of continuing education opportunities, giving professionals a chance to enhance their employment value or learn a new trade.
Health Care Facilities
The Southern Nevada Health District is one of the largest local public health organizations in the United States. The health district serves over 1.7 million residents, which is 70 percent of Nevada’s total population. Each year the district is responsible for safeguarding the public health of more than 37 million visitors to the area. Las Vegas has 15 acute care hospitals, rehabilitation centers and specialty hospitals.
One major new medical development in 2007 was the ground-breaking for the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute, being built as part of Mayor Oscar Goodman’s Downtown renovation plan. When it opens in late 2008, the new five-story institute will contain clinical, research and outpatient exam rooms for brain-disease patients.
Medical and health care education abounds throughout the region. Institutions providing medical and health care education include the University of Nevada, School of Medicine; the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; Nevada State College in Henderson; College of Southern Nevada; and Las Vegas College.
Housing
Las Vegas’ variety of neighborhoods promises a home for every lifestyle. In the Las Vegas region, housing is typically paired with planned retail and entertainment options, parks and green spaces and public and private schools.
Housing opportunities in the Las Vegas Valley run the gamut from sophisticated urban living in the city’s energized downtown area to charming bungalows or sparkling new homes within minutes of downtown to sprawling gated communities in suburban or rural settings a short drive from the city.
Master-planned communities are attractive to many newcomers; currently, there are approximately 26 in the Las Vegas area, with more in development each year. Many area homes are newly constructed and lavishly landscaped making them highly desirable to potential buyers.
Transportation
Cars are the favorite means of transportation and city planners are constantly striving to improve the freeways and increase mobility. Seventy-nine percent of Clark County workers drove to work alone in 2005, 12 percent carpooled, 3 percent took public transportation and 4 percent used other means. The remaining 2 percent worked at home. It took those who commuted an average of 24 minutes to get to work.
Citizens Area Transit (CAT) operates 49 routes to points throughout the city and metropolitan area, with buses and trolleys serving the "Strip" every fifteen minutes, 24 hours a day. CAT services extend throughout Clark County, providing service to 150,000 riders each day with 305 buses. The Las Vegas Monorail runs along a four-mile route along the Strip, linking major resorts, hotels, attractions and the convention center.
McCarran International Airport has served as the city’s gateway for visitors since its beginning in 1948. McCarran provides service to nearly 46.2 million passengers arriving and departing the city each year. It is currently the fifth busiest airport in the nation and the tenth busiest in the world. The airport offers more than 95 nonstop flights to cities around the globe. McCarran is part of the Clark County Airport System, which operates five airports, including four general aviation airports.
Spectator Sports
Las Vegas is full of opportunities to be an active fan or spectator. The Las Vegas 51s, an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, have the proud distinction of being the longest enduring franchise in the history of professional sports in Southern Nevada. Las Vegas Triple-A baseball was born on April 10, 1983 before a crowd of 10,622 at Cashman Field and has since enjoyed 24 seasons in the Silver State.
The Las Vegas Wranglers, Las Vegas’ professional hockey team, is part of the National Conference pacific division of the ECHL. Loyal fans root the Wranglers to victory during the season at the Orleans Arena. There is also a professional rodeo competition that brings riders and roughnecks to the city of lights.
Las Vegas might not have a National Football Team, but football is alive and well in the city. Las Vegas is home to the Showgirlz, a professional tackle football team.
The main event in Las Vegas is always the ever-popular boxing competitions. Boxing legends have hit the ring in Las Vegas in some of the most talked about bouts in history.

Choice Dining
Today, the Las Vegas area boasts more superstar chefs and restaurants than anywhere else in the United States. Residents and visitors alike are privileged to enjoy diverse dining options that mix accommodating servers, affordable menu options, and unique atmospheres to create an unparalleled dining experience.
In addition to the wide selection on the Strip, there are many neighborhoods that offer great dining experiences. Cravings of any flavor can be satisfied in Las Vegas with a plethora of cuisine options– Italian, Chinese, Creole, French, American regional, Mexican, Japanese, British, Scottish, Irish, Indian, German and many more!
Playtime
Hailed as the entertainment capital of the world, the fun never stops in Las Vegas! No matter the season, you’ll find options galore on the Strip. The magnificent fountain shows at the Bellagio or the Wynn dazzle visitors day and night. Activities like watching schools of fish at the aquarium inside the Silverton, catching roaring lions at the MGM Grand, spotting white tigers at the Mirage and observing the wildlife habitat at the Flamingo, make Las Vegas an animal lovers paradise. These words best describe the people of Las Vegas.
