Las Vegas' health care has entered a new era with the recent addition of several high-tech medical facilities and expanded health care offerings. Today the area's 15 hospitals and major medical centers offer quality care from some of the finest physicians and medical personnel in the nation.

"The Las Vegas medical community has grown up and matured in recent years and is regarded as a vital resource for the entire southwestern United States," says Dr. Flip Homansky, Medical Director for Valley, Desert Springs, Summerlin and Spring Valley hospitals. "People from around the region rely on the medical expertise available in Las Vegas, and we're building a reputation for quality medicine that we can be proud of."

The Southern Nevada Health District, one of the largest local public health districts in the nation, serves a population of 1.5 million, representing 69 percent of Nevada's population. Public health services are available to everyone, regardless of income.

Medical and health care education is also plentiful in the Las Vegas area, and the affiliation of academic institutions with health care providers in the region contributes to the area's quality patient care. Institutions providing medical and health education include the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Nevada State College in Henderson, Community College of Southern Nevada and the Las Vegas College.

Southern Nevada's fast-paced growth has spurred the construction of several new hospitals in quick succession in recent years. The new construction has afforded health care centers the opportunity to incorporate the latest technology into their facilities.

"The medical community has been proactive in meeting the growing needs of Las Vegas," adds Dr. Homansky. "We are constantly pushing the envelope of technology to ensure Las Vegans have access to the best possible medical care. We strive hard every day to offer every patient quality health care using the most advanced medical technology available with a caring and compassionate touch. That's just good doctors practicing good medicine, and that's what you'll find in Las Vegas."

Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) is the official cancer institute of the state of Nevada. An academic research and care institution, NVCI is comprised of a team of dedicated researchers and clinicians who are committed to advancing the frontiers of knowledge of cancer through research and world-class, research-linked services to Nevadans and people throughout the southwest. NVCI is a statewide organization. In southern Nevada, its services are housed in a state-of-the-art, multidimensional cancer research and care center at One Breakthrough Way, 10441 W. Twain Ave (just east of Town Center Drive and I-215) in the Summerlin district of Las Vegas. The institute is dedicated to state-of-the-art research and implementation of groundbreaking methods of prevention, detection and treatment of cancer through:

            *           Meditation room

            *           Full-service cafe

            *           Spiritual and psychosocial counseling

            *           Linkages with and to other resources

            *           Navigation assistance that provides patients with access to information and resources that will help support them at their time of diagnosis, care and need

NVCI is a collaborative effort involving Nevada's oncology community, academic leaders, legislators, corporations, health care advocates, cancer patients, their families and other concerned residents of the state. NVCI is wholly committed to offering the residents of Nevada services that offer the most current and most advanced cancer treatment options in a warm and tranquil setting with the utmost in patient and family support services in mind.

With an emphasis on advancing discovery, care and hope through excellence in research, NVCI is addressing cancer prevention through research, prevention, detection, treatment and education. Everyday, the professionals at the institute are working to create a state-wide network linked to excellent community physicians and hospitals to ensure access to clinical trials in the community, expanding state-wide epidemiology and prevention efforts and providing outreach into the many regional, cultural, ethnic and religiously diverse constituencies that comprise Nevada.

"It has been rewarding to observe the response from throughout the community to the creation of an academic and research-based organization that is committed to the mission of preventing, detecting, caring for and curing cancer and employees of the institute who have come from around the world benefit from the healthy lifestyle offered by the climate in the Las Vegas Valley, the diversity of services, the overall low stress environment and the 'can do' attitude that is universally found throughout the region. These, among other factors, separate Las Vegas and Nevada from other cities, regions and states," said Heather H. Murren, CFA, the institute's Chief Executive Officer.

The University of Nevada School of Medicine recently earned approval for its post-graduate residency in surgical critical care from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for three years, retroactive to 2004. The fellowship, which partners with University Medical Center, will bring top surgeons from across the country to Las Vegas where they will specialize in critical care surgery.

Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center is home to the Nevada Neurosciences Institute, a Renal Transplant Center, Sleep Disorder Center, Gamma Knife Center, Breast Center and Intra-operative MRI procedures -- the only ones of their kind in Southern Nevada. Sunrise Children's Hospital has developed world-class programs in a number of pediatric subspecialties and women's care services.

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center recently became home to a new Cardiac Care Program that utilizes advanced cardiac equipment. The facility can now offer diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures, coronary artery bypass surgery and heart valve surgery. The hospital will also be able to provide non-cardiac procedures, including surgery for thoracic and abdominal aneurysms, lung surgery, carotid artery surgery and leg bypass procedures.

Another medical initiative being heavily promoted is development of a multi-million dollar Academic Medical Center near the "South Strip" at the confluence of U.S. 95 and I-215. Such a facility would be used for clinical and laboratory research as well as patient care and would serve as a teaching environment for medical specialties and research.
